During
FY 1998, the State Central
Register received 339,649
calls, which is a decrease
of 15,930 calls from last
year.
In FY
98, 114,002 children were
reported as abused/neglected
statewide. 37,045 (32%) of
those were confirmed cases.
In
Illinois during 1998, there
were 69 indicated cases of
child abuse and neglect
related fatalities. This is
a decrease from 1997 in
which there were 90
fatalities.
During 1998, an estimated
3,154,000 children were
reported for child abuse and
neglect to protective
service agencies in the
United States. This figure
represents a 2.4% decrease
from the previous year,
although the number of
reports remain near its
record high, approximately
30% higher than the number
of reports filed 10 years
ago.
Among child abuse reports:
51% neglect
25% physical abuse
11% other forms of
maltreatment
10% sexual abuse
3% emotional maltreatment
The number of confirmed
cases of child abuse and
neglect was estimated at
1,009,000 (32%) in 1998.
35% of the 1,009,000 cases
of abuse or neglect received
no services aimed at
preventing further abuse or
neglect.
An average of 40% of
children who died from abuse
between 1996-1998 had prior
or current contact with
their state's child
protective service agency.
More than three children
die each day as a result of
abuse or neglect.
The nation's overall crime
rate fell more than 21% from
1993-1997, reports of abuse
grew by 8% and confirmed
cases increased 4% during
this same time period.
