Iowa Facts                                                         (FY2002)

  • The state of Iowa accepted 23,411 child abuse cases in 2002. 8,389 of these cases were confirmed.
  • The cases accepted by DHS involved 12,295 children
  • Confirmed cases of child abuse in Iowa included:
    • 69.9% Denial of Critical Care (commonly known as neglect)
    • 16.4% Physical Injury
    • 6.9% Sexual Abuse and Child Prostitution
    • 3.6% Manufacturing a Dangerous Drug in a Child's Presence
    • 3.0% Presence of Illegal Drugs
    • 0.2% Mental Injury
  • 16.8 out of every 1,000 children in Iowa were victims of confirmed abuse in 2002.
  • The Iowa infant mortality rate was 3.4% in 2001. This is down from 6.3 deaths per thousand in 2000.
  • According to the latest census, 19.8% of all children under 18 in Iowa live in single-parent households, compared to 23.3% in the United States.

    Scott County Facts

  • The average child poverty rate in 2000 was 13.2% for Scott County. This is higher than the overall state of Iowa's rate of 10.8%.
  • In 2002, Scott County accepted 1,725 reports of child abuse. 549 of these reports were confirmed; these reports involved 860 abused children.

Illinois Facts
  • The State Central Register received 304,945 calls during the 2002 fiscal year. 306,506 calls were received in the previous fiscal year.
  •  4, 946 children were taken into protective custody in the state of Illinois in 2002. 13,700 children in Illinois were in substitute care.

  • 98,518 children were reported as being abused and neglected, with 27,338 of these being indicated. This is a 5.3% decrease in indicated cases from last year.

  •  In 2002, 8,182 children in Illinois were reported as sexually abused. Of these, 2,804 were indicated.

  • Confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in Illinois included:
    • 29.4% Risk of Harm
    • 22.0% Lack of Supervision
    • 13.5% Blatant Disregard
    • 11.2% Sexual Abuse
    • 10.4% Physical Abuse
    • 9.9% Environmental Neglect
    • 2.6% Lack of Health Care
    • 1.0% Emotional Abuse
    • 0.1% Death
  •  73 indicated death reports were received in the state of Illinois in 2002. Of these, 58.9% were abuse deaths and 41.1% were neglect deaths.

Rock Island County Facts

  • 2000 census data indicates that 2,614 families with children under 18 years of age are below the poverty level. Specifically, 37.8% of families with a female head of household and children under 18 are below the poverty level.
  • 1,894 children were reported as abused and neglected in 2002. Of these, 589 were indicated. This is rate of 14.2 per 1,000 children.
  • 138 children were reported sexually abused in Rock Island County in 2002. Of these, 43 were indicated.
