  • A total of 22,344 child abuse cases were accepted by the Iowa Department of Human Services in 2000 which is an all time high for the state. 

  • In 2000, there were 7,853 confirmed cases of child abuse in Iowa. 

  • This represents 35.1% of the total cases reported. Among confirmed cases of child abuse in Iowa:

    65.2% Denial of critical care

    23.0% Physical injury

      8.7% Sexual abuse & prostitution

      2.8% Presence of illegal drugs

       .2% Mental injury

  • Date shows that 14 out of every 1,000 children in Iowa were victims of confirmed abuse in 2000.

  •   The infant mortality rate for the State of Iowa in 2000 was 6.3 per 1,000 live births, which is an increase from 5.7 per 1,000 live births in 1999.    

  •  In Iowa, 19.8 % of all children under 18 live in single-parent households compared to 23.3% in the United States. 


Scott County Facts

  • In Scott County, there were 697 confirmed abused/neglected children, which is a rate of 16.19 per 1,000 children compared to the State rate of 13.76.

  • A total of 1,610 reports were accepted by DHS with 509 (31.6%) being confirmed cases of child abuse.  The State of Iowa had a confirmation rate of 35.1%. 

  • In 2000, the infant mortality rate was 8.5 per 1,000 live births compared to 7.2 in 1999. 


Illinois Facts

  • During FY 2000, the State Central Register received 306,818 calls, which is a increase of 1,873 calls from last year. 

  • In FY 2000, 103,513 children were reported as abused/neglected statewide.  32,857 (32%) of those were confirmed cases, which is a decrease of 2.9% from 1999.  

  • In Illinois during 2000, 5% of the total number of children reported for abuse were taken into protective custody.

  • In Illinois, 21.9% of children under 18 live in a single-parent household compared to 23.3% in the United States.  

  • Among confirmed cases of child abuse in Illinois:

34.4% Risk of harm

23.9% Lack of supervision

11.9% Environmental neglect

11.1% Sexual abuse

  9.8% Physical abuse

  5.0% Blatant disregard

   2.9% Lack of health care

   1.0% Emotional abuse

     .1% Death


Rock Island County Facts

  • In FY 2000 there were 2,080 children reported for child abuse or neglect, which is a rate of 43.7 per 1,000 children.  The state rate is 27.6 per 1,000 children.

  • Of the FY 2000 reports, 38.5% (801) were indicated reports.

  • 115 children were placed in protective custody in FY 2000 compared to 120 children in 1999.

  • During FY 2000, there were 12 confirmed reports of substance exposed infants compared to 11 in 1999.
