National Facts                                                           (FY2008)

• According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Child Welfare Information Gateway (formerly the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect), there were 3.5 million reports of possible child maltreatment reported in 2007 (most recent data available based on the Federal Fiscal Year). 

  In the United States, 794,000 children were confirmed victims of abuse or neglect.

  10.06 out of every 1,000 children were victims of confirmed abuse.
   
  Confirmed child abuse and neglect cases involved:

  • 59% neglect, including medical neglect
  • 10.8% physical abuse
  • 7.6% sexual abuse
  • 13.1% multiple types of abuse
  • 4.2% other forms of abuse

  An estimated 1,760 children died due to child abuse/neglect. (A 15% increase over 2006).  75% of those children were age 4 and under.

2008 Iowa Facts                                                                    

• According to the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS), there were 23,236 reports of child abuse/neglect in the state.

• 17.63 out of every 1,000 children were reported as abused/neglected.

• There were 7,981 confirmed reports of abuse/neglect in the state (a 34% confirmation rate).

• Confirmed child abuse and neglect cases in Iowa included:

  •  .04% manufacturing of methamphetamine
  •  4.0% presence of illegal substances in child
  • 79% neglect (all types)
  • 11% physical abuse
  •  4% sexual abuse
  •  1.1% cohabitation with a sex offender
  •  0.2% mental injury

• There were 1,519 reports of child abuse/neglect in Scott County. 

• 17.03 out of every 1,000 children were reported as abused/neglected.

• There were 518 confirmed reports of child abuse/neglect in Scott County (a 34% confirmation rate).

2008 Illinois Facts

• According to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), 96,833 children were reported as abused or neglected.

• 8.1 out of every 1,000 children were victims of confirmed abuse.

• There were 27,790 confirmed reports of abuse/neglect in the state (a 28.7% confirmation rate).

• Confirmed child abuse and neglect cases in Illinois included:

  • 19.6% risk of harm
  • 34.4% blatant disregard
  • 20.8% lack of supervision
  • 17.8% physical abuse
  • 29.1% sexual abuse
  • 12.3% environmental neglect
  • 15.4% lack of health care
  • 13.3% emotional abuse
  • 38.0% death

2008 Rock Island County Facts

• According to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services
  (DCFS), there were 2,049 reports of child abuse/neglect in Rock Island County. 

50.4 out of every 1,000 children were reported as abused/neglected.

There were 802 confirmed reports of abuse/neglect in Rock Island County.  (A 39% confirmation rate).

Confirmed child abuse and neglect cases in Rock Island County included:
