Position Title: Doula     

Job Status: Regular, Non-Exempt, Salaried Employee

FTE:  1.0 FTE 

 

Job Summary: The Doula is a trained, certified birthing assistant who provides prenatal, labor and birth and postnatal support to birthing families; facilitates prenatal education groups; and helps mothers learn how to nurture, support and advocate for themselves and their new babies. Responsible for promoting healthy pregnancies, breast-feeding initiation and healthy parent-infant attachment. Responsible for assisting and supporting families weekly in the home and making necessary community referrals.

 

Work Site: Child Abuse Council Main Office in Moline, Illinois, and community-based service locations (such as participant homes, local medical centers, local medical clinics/provider offices, health departments, etc.) within Rock Island and Scott Counties, with some out of town travel required. 

                              

Supervisor: Doula Program Coordinator     

Specific Duties:

  • Provide evidence based information, education and support to assigned families

    • Develop and facilitate prenatal education and family support groups

    • Maintain professional boundaries while meeting weekly with families to develop a foundation of trust

    • Attend the birth and support the laboring mother and her family or support person(s)

    • Assist families in initiating and strengthening the parent-child relationship

    • Encourage, support and assist with breastfeeding initiation  

    • Assess family functioning for safety, ability of family to care for children and determine appropriate interventions

  • Provide services linkage and coordination for assigned families, as needed

  • Develop and maintain good working relationship with medical provider community

  • Maintain client case records and databases in accordance with program standards

  • Meet with assigned supervisor as scheduled

  • Participate in agency and staff development activities

  • Attend and complete all mandatory Doula training

 

General Duties:

  • Maintain personnel records (i.e. time sheet and mileage/expense vouchers)

  • Attend all CAC staff meetings and HFI team meetings

  • Assist in general CAC planning, public activities and fundraising as appropriate

 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; or minimum high school diploma/GED and 3 years demonstrated experience working with adolescents, pregnant teens, infants and families

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences in the workplace and in the community

  • Bilingual a plus, but not required

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality standards and professional boundaries

  • Must be able to work flexible hours and be on-call

  • Must be able to attend out of town, overnight training

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and provide own transportation

  • Must comply with the following CAC requirements as informed through local Medical Center/Health Systems (Unity Point Health Systems, Genesis Health Systems etc.) expectations for routineengagement of consumers within their systems/ facilities. This will include the receipt of/
    maintaining as up‐to‐date (as warranted/ required) TB testing, MMR, Hep B, Varicella/ Chicken Pox, Influenza (annual renewal required) and TDap Immunizations/ vaccinations. Wavers may potentially be available pending the policies/ requirements/ regulations of the implementing
    Medical Center/ Health System. In instances of exception/ exclusion documentation/ waver must be provided/ completed substantiating same. Note: no wavers (pending medical indication)
    available/ accepted for the influenza and TB vaccination requirements. Exclusions from receipt of Influenza vaccination must be provided by the Employee’s Physician.

 

Salary: $28,000
